Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has instructed the closure of 717 State-operated liquor outlets (known as TASMAC shops) situated within 500 metres of educational institutions and places of worship throughout the State within a fortnight.
An official statement noted that, among these 717 outlets, 276 are positioned within 500 metres of different places of worship, 186 close to educational institutions and 255 near bus terminals. TASMAC operates a total of 4,765 retail liquor outlets across the State.
On May 10, Mr. Vijay assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu along with nine Cabinet colleagues.
On his inaugural day, Mr. Vijay approved three files, one among them being the provision of 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers using up to 500 units of electricity every two months.
Mr. Vijay cleared the files immediately after the swearing-in ceremony, in the presence of his admirers and supporters assembled at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
On May 11, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister took the oath as a legislator in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Alongside him, his Cabinet colleagues, Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, former Chief Ministers Edappadi K. Palaniswami (AIADMK) and O. Panneerselvam (now DMK), along with 218 others, took oath as members of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, in the presence of Pro-tem Speaker M.V. Karuppaiah.
